Assassination at Darkmire

I’ve been addicted recently to a game called Armello that is on the PC! Its a short but still very richly detailed game which mimics that of a board game, so taking turns, moving around a board, playing cards, etc.

Its fantastic and I encourage anyone to go check it out, links to its website and other info is down below like usual, and enjoy the story!

“Your message said there were bandits raiding the settlement, instead what I see is a squad of King’s Guards littering the street,” Zosha hissed in frustration. The orange furred wolf stood tall and muscular cowered before her icy stare and small stature. Her presence made him nervous but she could tell her anger made him terrified.

Lordsofthedice_Armello_Story1_Zosha_portrait.png

“Yes well…you…you see…there were bandits, but.” The wolf stammered, his back pushing up against the thick wooden wall of the room. “The toad he showed up with the guards and pushed them out, said martial law was in affect…” he paused his eyes looking up at Zosha for a brief moment before he had to look away again, his tail tucked between his legs, “he said it was the king’s orders and the toad said he was in charge now.”

Lordsofthedice_Armello_Story1_Peril_toad.PNG

Letting out a seething breath she stood up straight, arcing her back slightly with a crack before leaning back in her usual posture, hands close to the pommels of her two blades on either hip. “You were right to call for my help, I shall deal with them.”

“But its the King’s Guards! You can’t possibly take them all on!” He exclaimed, “Darkmire needs you alive.”

Lordsofthedice_Armello_Story1_Starting_Quests_2.PNG

A laugh escaped her, “you shouldn’t worry about me. I must remove their presence including that toad, it would create a bad name for Night Mother if I didn’t.” She sniffed the air, her ears twitching slightly at a creak in the floorboards above. “Guests?”

“Ye..yes…my family, they moved in recently for safety.”

“A wise move,” She snickered, her tail swishing back and forth. “Before I go, tell me do these guards have anything to do with Barnaby? I had a run in with that damn rabbit several times to the north.”

Lordsofthedice_Armello_Story1_Turn02_duel.PNG

“Not that I know of… but, you know how those rabbits are with the king, trading their artifacts and jewels for political favors.”

“You are right about that… keep your nose to the air for any more news and you’ll stay in good faith of the Night Mother.” Zosha said before leaving not waiting for a response. The door and halls quickly opened before her rapid movement. The darkness a stranger to some was her element. With the rising moon she scouted the settlement of Darkmire, counting every guard of the king and the location of the toad himself.

In the late hours of the night with clouds covering the crescent moon she struck. Her blade slicing between a gap in the thick armor of a guard. A low whine escaped him muffled by the light breeze in the air, his descent made soft by her guiding arms to the ground.

By the time the clouds moved off of the moon and its brilliant white light filled the sky once more one of the ten guards who patrolled the settlement was gone.

Lordsofthedice_Armello_Story1_King's_Guard.PNG

She didn’t waste any time, once the guard was hidden away in a hole she quickly traveled along the tunnel network created by those loyal to the Night Mother. Her blades shined briefly in the moonlight that became hidden by clouds moments later. The sound of a metal blade cutting through the chain-mail of another guard sounded. A nearby guard his ears perked, sniffed the air in the direction of the sound. A moment past before a small dagger lanced through the air piercing into his neck.

With the second guard hidden away she waited with anticipation, the sound of the third guard crashing to the dirt floor, his armor rattling echoed in the still air.

Clouds moved away from the moon once more to reveal the dead guard, a pool of blood forming around his neck where the dagger stay lodged. Two other guards appeared, their metal helmets turning, their halberds raised.

In that moonlight her blades connected and twirled through the air leading her straight to the two guards. They barely raised their weapons before the blades spun through gaps in their armor finding the weak points with ease. Quick precision left the two guards on the floor, missing limbs and surrounded by their own blood.

Just as fast as she appeared she vanished. She did not waste time at all moving through the city’s tunnel network straight towards its center. Her ears twitched at clattering metal above and she quickly burst from her cover upon the unsuspecting guard. His head separated from his body as he crashed to the floor.

“The Whirlwind! Back up to the lord we must protect him!” A guard barked before letting out a howl to the stars above.

Following the retreating guards she didn’t care to hide anymore instead taking a forward approach with her blades at the ready. She easily caught up to one guard, ducking beneath a swipe of his halberd she lashed out spilling his guts out and kept moving. Her blades red with blood sliced through the thin door that stood before her into the mayor’s home. There she found herself facing the final three guards, two of which who retreated upstairs to their lord.

The guard facing her pounded his chest before taking a readied stance, his halberd prepared to lash out.

Lordsofthedice_Armello_Story1_Zosha_fighting.PNG

Accepting the challenge with a grin and bowing swiftly she pulled her cowl tightly around her head and pounded forward, jumping above the swing of his halberd. Connecting her blades together, she gripped the ceiling with her free hand, claws digging into wood before she kicked off with feet. Her blades fueled by the momentum of her descent sunk deep into the guard’s shoulder straight into his heart. A loud growl of pain erupted as the guard slumped, blood pumping from his heart to the floor.

Ripping the blades out she moved to the stairs, pulling free a small sphere she tossed it up. A moment passed before an explosion emitted above, a high pitched yelp along with grunts of pain echoed down to her. Charging up she found the tight corridors filled with smoke, a small crater in the floor where the bomb set off, sending splinters everywhere.

In the dissipating smoke she saw the two guards still alive but briefly stunned, beyond was the slanderous fat toad richly dressed and helpless, crying hysterically. She approached blades ready before pausing at the heavy footsteps behind her. Spinning around just in time she crossed her blades to meet the large hammer that bared down on her.

Lordsofthedice_Armello_Story1_Barnaby_Fighting.PNG

“Well if it isn’t Zosha herself! I figured you were up to no good when we met out in the plains!”

“I could say the same to you!” She growled in return and jumped back letting his hammer crash into the floor. Dashing forward she swung her blades towards him.

With quick reflexes of his own Barnaby brought his hammer up to shield himself and shoved her off before swinging his hammer around not allowing her any chance for reprieve.

The hammer hit her hard, slamming heavily against her blades and sending her crashing towards the toad and tumbling over him right out the window.

Landing in the dirt she let out a harsh cough, blood coating her lips. Spitting out the blood she quickly retreated from the open space and back into the safety of the tunnels. Once hidden she began focusing on evening out her breathing, the effect of the hammer’s blow wasn’t evident in visible wounds but instead in the blood she had coughed up.

“Come out Zosha! Do you think a rat can hide in a hole from a rabbit?”

Spitting up some more blood she quickly began moving through the tunnel. Scampering along she felt a rush of adrenaline at the sound of the tunnel collapsing behind her. Moving faster she rolled into a side entrance of another tunnel as the one she was in completely collapsed.

“I can hear you down there, come face me and prove to me you are truly ‘The Whirlwind’!”

Grabbing another bomb she rolled it down one tunnel entrance and moved in the opposite direction. Gritting teeth she waited for the explosion and leapt out with its bang. She grit her teeth in pain from the sting of pain within her from the sudden ascent. Blades spinning she descended back down on the distracted rabbit. Her blade sinking into the left shoulder of the rabbit.

Lordsofthedice_Armello_Story1_duel2.PNG

A cry of pain escaping him he elbowed her back then spun around, his hammer hitting her side, sending her rolling through the dirt. Ripping the blade out of his shoulder he dropped to his knees in pain, “finish her!” He growled in command.

Rolling to a stop, Zosha pushed herself onto her hands and knees quickly, her tail swishing back and forth in frustration, the second half of her dual blade lay close by. Swiping it up she stood to her feet, her usual stance lazy in comparison to the start of the night.

Two guards descended upon her, their halberds raised with every intention to end her life.

Back-pedaling away from the halberds their shock-wave nearly stumbled her, her tail keeping her balance.

With a snarl one guard lunged forward, the tip of the halberd coming towards her.

Nearly skewered through she spun around feeling her side nicked by the blade and sliced her own blade into the guards side causing him to stumble to his knee. Ripping the blade from the flesh, blood spilled rapidly as she added to the growing pool by chopping into the guards neck a couple of times ending his life. Spitting blood onto the dead guard she waved her hand to the last guard with a bloody grin, her free hand holding her side to try to seal the wound.

“Damn rat, you’ll never dethrone our king!” The guard roared and brought his halberd down with air-cracking speed.

Faster then the furious guard, Zosha’s blade struck with lightning reflexes ending him with an accurate cut to his stomach spilling his innards.

Taking a deep breath Zosha turned her attention to Barnaby who held his hammer in one hand.

“You think with this victory that you get closer to the throne? Dirty rat you should return to your slums!”

“I expect nothing less from the loud arrogant rabbits, you were better hiding in your holes for all those generations!” Zosha spat back and charged forward, her final blade still held tightly in hand.

Standing up straight and prideful he ignored his useless left arm and gripped his hammer single-handedly. Swinging with all his might Barnaby brought his hammer around with air-splitting force, the strike caused Zosha to stop dead in her tracks by knocking her blade from her hands, her own arm close to being ripped from its socket.

Pausing in that brief moment she saw the glint of her second blade in the moonlight lying on the ground. Without a second thought she ducked low dodging Barnaby’s second attack. The hilt fit into her hands so perfectly its sharp blade heading straight for the rabbit’s heart, ending him in similar fashion to the ten guards littering the street. The final gasp of the rabbit fluttered into her ears, its sound reminiscent to all the others slain by her.

Lordsofthedice_Armello_Story1_duel3_death2.PNG

Ripping the blade out of the rabbit she took a deep breath enjoying the moonlight and the cool air. A light breeze blew into the settlement the blood caking her fur caused a shiver to run down her spine. She shook herself, her tail lashing back and forth in anticipation. She turned her attention towards the building with the cowering toad still inside, her dual blades still hungry for one more this night.

“Nicely detailed character sheet”

Hope you enjoyed it! In terms of this particular story it took place over two very short over the claim on a settlement. The round itself I did win, receiving a prestige victory, though I’ve definitely done better in other rounds.

Skirmish Between Gideon and Nissa

Here is another update! Been wanting to buy this game for quite awhile having grown up with Heroscape. It might be called Magic the Gathering, but this is basically Heroscape 2.0 and it is fantastic! Due to my heroscape collection being stored away and inaccessible for now, I could only use what came in the box to face off against my friend. Nonetheless I had a ton of fun playing it and making this story and hope to do more with the rest of the collection.

Besides that enjoy the story, links to more info on this game is down below, and look forward to another post next week!

The plains stretched far and wide, nearly flat with wind sweeping across carrying whispers of a great civilization that had covered the land. The ruins that broke the wind was the only visible feature of this once great city, housing bones and artifacts left long ago any valuables since taken. Even with its emptiness, the promise of other riches still drew interest from outsiders, the river that ran through the land carried minerals and resources valuable for a whole assortment of reasons.

He marched along with his two fellow companions, both were rhox just like he was, massive and powerful humanoids with large horns. He served his people through many battles knowing that through his power he could make things right and make those he serve proud. His hide was armored and thick able to take on many projectiles and shake them off. The shield in his right hand the perfect tool to protect him from any dangers that could proof fatal. Best of all was the massive hammer wielded in his left hand, empowered by his strong muscles he could swing it and break any bone against its blunt force.

They had been traveling for a couple of days now, reports of another planeswalker in the area had caused alarm and now marching through the sand, he looked at his leader, Gideon Jura looking out in the distance seeking his opponent who challenged for the riches at the bottom of the river.

“There, in the distance!” One of the hookmasters yelled standing on top a small incline of rocks. A kor, one of the human nomadic tribes that lived within this region, their keen eyes able to see far. He looked out unable to see what the kor could, but as time went by his dull eyes saw the massive forest elementals marching along, the group of elves behind the protection of living roots.

“Hold the high ground! If they want this land they will come to us and we will give them their challenge!” Gideon roared.

He shook with excitement, his heart racing, the blood flowing hot at the thrill of battle through his pulsing muscles. He banged his hammer against his shield his two companions joining in. A roar escaped him, a cacophony of battle cries, rhox and human in tune with one another ready for battle. He watched the elementals begin their charge, the elves close behind releasing a quick volley of arrows. With a raised shield the arrows fell harmlessly, banging his shield again he watched with anticipation at the onslaught of battle.

lordsofthedice_mtg_arena_duel_GideonvsNissa (10)

The elementals descended upon them, their blows hitting against shield and smashing against the rocks protecting the hookmasters. Releasing another volley the elves followed behind their arrows with smooth elvish blades drawn.

lordsofthedice_mtg_arena_duel_GideonvsNissa (11)

Moving forward he swung his hammer together with one of his companions. The hammer hit against the elvish blade completely shattering it while the other hammer struck against the elf clipping his side and sending him back several feet stunned. The nearby elf quickly released three arrows. With a quick raise of a shield two were blocked while the third hit against his shoulder, his thick skin stopping the arrow short. Whipping out the arrow he began to approach the two elves but stopped short at the sight of the elemental baring down on his fellow rhox to the left.

Moving to help his companion he felt rage flow through him at the fight suddenly stopping, the elemental quickly shrinking away in the opposite direction. A roar left him joined by his two companions at the frustration of the retreating elemental, their hammers ready to crush it.

lordsofthedice_mtg_arena_duel_GideonvsNissa (12).JPG

The shout of battle behind drew his attention, turning he watched Gideon swing around at the sudden appearance of the three elementals. They all struck at Gideon their attacks hitting his shield and missing knocking up loose sand. Through the drifting sand he saw Gideon strike down one of elementals with a single strike, its form falling back with a shuttering shake.

A leaf arrow imbued with magic went flying by barely missing Gideon which in turn brought a roaring command from his lips. The hookmasters suddenly free of the elementals surrounding them turned their hooks upon the nearby elven archer and the planeswalker herself- Nissa Revane, one strong enough to rival Gideon’s might.

Focused on the release of her leaf arrow she was struck by the hooks, their blades clipping through her skin but she merely shook them off releasing another arrow before retreating out of reach of the hookmasters.

With swift movement the hookmasters swung their blades around ending the life of the elven archer who tried to retreat with his leader.

Everything happened so swiftly his fist tightening around his hammer at the sight of the dead elf, knowing this small skirmish would soon finish with victory to Gideon.

lordsofthedice_mtg_arena_duel_GideonvsNissa (18).JPG

A sudden order roared across the battlefield. Looking back once more he saw Gideon strike down another tree, the order ringing loud and clear at what must be done. Banging his hammer against his shield he rallied his two companions into a thunderous charge straight for the retreating Nissa. An arrow pierced his back striking a deep wound but it didn’t stop his assault. The three of them bared down on Nissa trapping her from working her way back around to her remaining elves.

With swift blows the elf was barely able to dodge. Shields appeared around the rhox

lordsofthedice_mtg_arena_duel_GideonvsNissa (22)

empowered by Gideon the flow of magic fueled their strikes and the floating shields protected them against any returning attacks from Nissa.

Even with such swift action it was not long before the remaining elven archers came to the aid of their leader, arrows firing but missing at the sudden appearance of blinding golden light around the rhox.

In that moment of blindness Nissa was weak, he brought his hammer around, striking her down with a thunderous crack.

The elves quickly dragged their wounded leader away before more damage could be done to her body, the remaining elemental appeared and sacrificed itself to slow the rhox, their hammers tearing its limbs apart.

With victory the legend of Gideon Jura continues.

Hope you enjoyed, story was much shorter then the last post but then the game was very quick and sweet, lots of action and rolling of dice. One component of the game that was not shown through the pictures were spells, I sort of explained them however majority of spells were countered or not used in this particular fight. A previous game had a lot more happening with spells. One example of a spell in the story was the leaf arrow an enchantment that strengthens Nissa’s attack or the golden light at the end which made the Rhox’s attacks stronger.

A Session of Wiz-War

lordsofthedice_Wiz-War_Four_Wizards

The walls seemed so close and claustrophobic; their smooth, dark surface surrounding her on almost every side. It disquieted her further when she glanced upwards and saw the walls meet the ceiling only a few feet above her head. The only comfort she had within this labyrinth that she was stuck in were the crisscrossing red vines which emitted a soft red glow. Her fingers trailed one vine close by, its crystals hot and rough to the touch a comfort to her in this cold, smooth, barren maze.

lordsofthedice_Wiz-War_Start_Of_Field

Her fingers brushed against a thicker, brighter crystal. Gripping it, she closed her eyes and slowly dragged the crystal out from within the vine. The magic fed out of her grip and into the crystal, its form growing with every moment. Opening her hand and allowing the crystal to fall to the ground, she opened her eyes and knelt; she spotted three small, red, creatures made out of the crystal. Their bodies were misshaped and contorted; they had spikes of crystal sticking out in all directions as they stood atop thick dagger-like legs.

“Spy on the other three,” she said quick and concise. Standing up she watched as the three creatures quickly ran off; the distant sounds of their clicking feet echoing through the silent labyrinth. Reaching her hand into her thick, blood red robes, she pulled out a vial filled with a clear liquid. Chugging the contents she could feel an energetic feeling shoot through her nerves. Taking a deep breath, she launched off at a sprint. Turning several corners, the same walls still surrounding her she made it to a portal.

The portal was set into the walls, purple rays of energy slowly spinning beneath its arch, “Should take me to yellow.” She thought to herself. Renewing her strong sprint, she rushed through the portal. Darkness took her for a fraction of a second before it was filled with the same scene except a subtle difference. The crystal vines lighting the labyrinth were now lit yellow.

lordsofthedice_Wiz-War_Red_Wizard_About_To_Get_Yellow_Wizard_Treasure

She touched her fingers against one of the vines and could immediately sense her goal. The treasure she seeks to bring back to her foundation to win. Moving towards it, she felt visions fill her head. Her red crystal scouts had found their targets and were already filling her head with everything that was happening with her three opponents.

”Giddicus the Green already charging off in a rush. Buffed his speed like me, so he’s already in Baronok the Blue’s territory. Impressive that you would pick such a strategy, Giddicus.” The vision revealed Giddicus trying to use a spell to mimic a picklock to break through the door protecting one of Baronok’s treasures. Suddenly a shock of blue energy causes Giddicus to take a step back, rubbing his hands in pain. “It seems Giddicus forgot that Baronok is far too conservative to not protect his territory.” Huffing in frustration Giddicus begins to walk away, slowly beginning to transform into a werewolf. “Troublesome…going to change to a werewolf so you can move faster and steal other treasure to win…most likely mine.”

lordsofthedice_Wiz-War_Blue_Wizard_Protects_Treasure

She could sense the treasure close by her thoughts turning to the vision of the master of this territory coming closer to her. “Yuvanna the Yellow, to think she decided to stay and defend her territory with a flame wall, a shame she protected the wrong side, forgetting about me.” She stopped before the large treasure chest surrounded by the yellow vines. Brushing off the vines, she pulled out a small bag from within her robes. Placing the opening of the bag onto the treasure its form began to suck into the small bag. Little by little, the large chest vanished into the bag until finally she closed it and placed the bag back into her robes. “A shame the Arcane Order doesn’t supply us with two bags so I could get this contest done faster and claim my victory.”

Standing up she began to move towards the purple portal to make it back to her territory. Her mind filled with a vision again. The scene was once more of Giddicus but now a werewolf facing off against Baronok. She could not hear the heated argument the two had but she couldn’t help but smirk at the sight of Baronok running up to Giddicus and punching his snout before rushing back behind his door. “It seems even the conservative can be confident, a shame he didn’t sacrifice himself to slow down Giddicus.” She turned another corner and before her stood the portal once more. A warning flashed through her mind of Yuvanna picking up one of her treasures. A heat of anger flashed through her, “I thought for sure Yuvanna would challenge me not run like a coward to my treasure!” Fire formed between her fingertips as she rushed through the portal.

lordsofthedice_Wiz-War_Blue_Wizard_Punches_Green_Wizard

lordsofthedice_Wiz-War_Yellow_Wizard_Gets_Red_Wizard_Treasure

The dark filled her vision and was gone in an instant to reveal the familiar red vines snaking along the wall. Rushing forward she turned and saw Yuvanna’s back.

Yuvanna stood up, her hand slipping a bag filled with a treasure chest into her robes. “Didn’t expect you to get here so fast, Reivunn the Red.” She casually brushed a strand of blond hair behind her ear, the hood of her cloak shifting back slightly which she quickly fixed. “So going to shoot that fireball yet?”

Reivunn growled in rage and grew the fire within her hand. Taking a step forward she launched the ball of flame with her fury towards Yuvanna. A flood of water spewed forth from her, which quickly filled the chamber.

Reivunn’s vision was filled with the water, she helplessly squirmed in its torrent, but she could not move, her body was stuck to the wall. Her lungs screamed for air and at the last moment, the water stopped. She fell to the ground with a thud, gasping for breath. Looking up she could see Yuvanna staggering to her feet.

“I really hate using that spell but I’d rather be wet, than on fire. Nothing personal Reivunn,” She said breathlessly. Leaning against a wall for support she began to cast a spell, “Well I’ll be going I have treasure to collect.”

lordsofthedice_Wiz-War_Swap_Between_Blue_And_Yellow_Wizard

Reivunn slowly pulled herself to her feet. She watched with seething hatred as Yuvanna vanished and in her place appeared a waterlogged and tired old Baronok. “Well…I suppose she could have swapped with that werewolf.” Grinning, Reivunn pulled out a small hammer from within her robes and began to feed magic into its forms. She watched and waited as Baronok slowly stood up onto his feet. Once standing she released her spell, the hammer growing dramatically in size and smashed onto baronok’s head. The blow released a powerful gust of wind drying baronok’s robes in an instant, his form slowly collapsing back onto the ground.

“A bit too easy Baronok,” She smirked and walked over to his dazed figure, the hammer dissipating into the air. Searching through his robes, she found the bag and to her luck, it was filled with a treasure from Giddicus’s territory. “Thank you Baronok, but I’ll be winning now,” she said turning away the bag held in her hand. Taking a couple of steps, she suddenly felt a heat grow on her back. In an instant, she was launched forward and landed onto the ground, her body in flames. Quickly she pulled the water dripping off the walls to her body and washed away the flames, but the searing pain stayed.

“I’ll be taking that bag, back!” Reivunn heard Baronok call out. Trying to get up, the searing pain still gripping her nerves she felt a slime of liquid cover over her. She closed her eyes in dread at the ooze suddenly covering her body, making it difficult to breathe once again. To her relief the thick of the slime left her a moment later. Looking up from the ground, she could see Baronok was now a giant slime monster, which was starting to evaporate into mist.

lordsofthedice_Wiz-War_Final_Moments_Of_Blue_Wizard

“Damn it Baronok! You will not be getting away so easily!” She cried out, as she pulled out a second hammer and stood up in rage, the searing pain of the burn arched through her nerves. The pain screaming in her brain, she clenched her teeth in fury, feeding the fury into the hammer. She outstretched her left hand and shot out a buff of blue mist, which caused Baronok to return to his slime body, his mist form having been dispelled. She could see the slime suddenly panicking, its slanted face showing a big frown. She could not help but smile with glee at the sight of the sad slime, the hammer growing to its greatest possible size. Screaming in fury, she brought the hammer down.

The slime exploded in all directions, the magic of the hammer following each piece of slime and disintegrating it. In a flash the hammer was gone leaving nothing but the burnt crisp remains of the slime covering the ground.

A sudden vision of alarm filled Reivunn’s mind once more. She could sense Giddicus in his wolf form rushing to the end, ready to achieve victory with a second treasure. Gripped with dread at the thought of losing Reivunn rushed towards the burnt remains of Baronok. She began to dig through the pile of scorched black ooze; to her relief she found the bag filled with Giddicus’s treasure. Quickly, grabbing it, she stood up and began to run with what strength she had left.

lordsofthedice_Wiz-War_Green_Wizard_Moving_To_Victory

Turning several corners, she came into sight the portal to take her to victory. The red circular runes were on the ground and ceiling waiting to be activated with her return of two treasures. Stepping into the circle, she looked up to see the runes began to glow. “I won…I can’t believe it…I’m the Guildmaster of the Arcade Order now!” The distant screams of the other two wizards barely reached her ears as the red light of the runes filled her vision and whisked her away to another part of the great wizard tower.
